This report presents results from the Treatment Data Episode Data Set (TEDS) for discharges from substance abuse treatment in 2007. The report provides information on treatment completion, length of stay in treatment, and demographic and substance abuse characteristics of discharges from alcohol or drug treatment in facilities that reported to individual State administrative data systems. A total of 46 States submitted data for discharges occurring in 2007; therefore, the data presented in this report do not represent all discharges in all States.

.White House Drug Policy Director Awards $85.6 Million to Local Communities To Prevent Youth Drug Use

Gil Kerlikowske, Director of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), announced $22 million in new Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC) grants to 169 communities and 16 new DFC Mentoring grants across the country. The awards announced today are in addition to the $63 million in Continuation grants simultaneously released to 549 currently funded DFC coalitions and seven DFC Mentoring Continuation coalitions. These grants provide community coalitions needed support to prevent and reduce youth substance use.

A new school year brings new experiences, environments, friends, and at times, new challenges. Some grade school children will be pressured to experiment with drinking or drugs for the first time. Middle schools students, dealing with the transition to high school and the peer pressure to fit in, may be susceptible to the negative influence of alcohol and drug use. And many college students will encounter various temptations, such as abusing or misusing prescription drugs, believing it will help them get through the semester. Many college students are experiencing freedom from their parents for the first time and may be tempted to abuse drugs and alcohol.
